If you’re a vintage lover, this might be something you want to consider (if you’re filthy rich, that is). Fancy something dug up from the Titanic shipwreck?
A menu from a restaurant from the Titanic shipwreck was recently auctioned in the UK and has been sold for a whopping USD103,000 (approximately RM486,355)! It was sold at the auction of memorabilia and despite the high price, some letters on the menu have disappeared and it is also heavily water-stained.
The menu likely ended up in the North Atlantic for a time when the Titanic sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912, British auction house Henry Aldridge and Son Ltd. said in the lot description.
Before the mighty Titanic sank, the passengers onboard had a variety of choices available for their dinner, which included oysters, sirloin of beef with horseradish cream, and pureed parsnips, with desserts including apricot Bordaloue — a type of tart — and Victoria pudding.
They believe that the menu book was brought along by passengers who survived or were found later with the victims who died at that time. It is also believed to be the only surviving copy of the first class dinner menu on April 11.
The menu book was later found along with a photo album belonging to Canadian amateur historian, the late Len Stephenson.
In addition to the dinner menu, other items for sale include a Swiss-made pocket watch recovered from a passenger, Sinai Kantor. It is sold at a price of £97,000 (RM560,762).
Now, assuming you can afford the auctioned menu, would you buy it? You can’t have the food on the night Titanic sank, but owning a menu from the shipwreck could hit differently!
