As reported earlier, an elderly couple had passed away after consuming puffer fish after purchasing it from a Facebook seller and cooking it.
Their daughter, Ng Ai Lee, had hoped that the Ministry of Health and the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority will enforce existing acts and drag any guilty parties to court.
Now, according to a report by China Press, she, along with her family members, is once again calling for justice through the prosecution of the fish trader who had sold the puffer fish to her parents, leading them to their deaths.
They had hung and carried numerous banners with the message, “Justice for parents’ lives and legal prosecution for irresponsible fish traders” written in both Chinese and English during the late Mr. Wong’s funeral procession and at his memorial site.
Additionally, they are also calling for the government to ban the sales of puffer fish in Malaysia, and have since submitted a letter of appeal to Health Minister, Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, to speed up their investigation into this matter and to take action so that future incidents can be prevented.
Prior to this, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah had made it clear that the sales of puffer fish in Malaysia is not allowed, as the fish contains dangerous toxins.
This comes after a total of 58 cases of puffer fish poisoning were reported, involving 18 deaths, from 1985 to March 2023.
Hence, if you see anyone selling puffer fish at markets or online, please do avoid purchasing and consuming it and notify the authorities immediately.
