Elephant Trunk Rock, an iconic rock formation in Taiwan, has collapsed into the sea.
According to New Taipei’s Ruifang District Office, the “trunk” part of the rock formation collapsed into the sea on Saturday (December 16) due to strong winds and waves.
Yang Sheng-min, the district office head, received a report regarding the incident at 1:55 pm on Saturday. He said that the strong winds and waves in the afternoon, coupled with prolonged seawater erosion, likely contributed to the partial collapse.
Currently, the area is enclosed. New Taipei’s Tourism and Travel Department has been informed of the incident and advises the public to avoid going to the rock formation for safety reasons.
The information page about Elephant Trunk Rock has also been removed from the New Taipei Tourism and Travel Department’s official website as of the time of writing.
The Elephant Trunk Rock, located on Taiwan’s northeast coast, has been a famous attraction in Taiwan for many years due to its unique formation that resembles an elephant.
