An elderly couple recently travelled all the way from Kuala Lumpur to Perak, only to discover that the tourist attraction they wanted to visit doesn’t exist and that the video they saw on social media was created using artificial intelligence (AI).

A Malaysian woman, dyaaaaaaa._, took to her Threads account to share the incident, as she was checking the couple into the hotel where she works and had to deliver the bad news that the tourist attraction they went all the way to Perak for didn’t exist.

She wrote, “Weyh, I swear, I was crazy shocked. There was this elderly couple that came to check into the hotel, and they asked me if I had taken the cable car at Kuak Hulu.”

She thought that they were joking and dismissed their question, but when she was told that they had travelled from Kuala Lumpur just to visit the cable car attraction, she realised something was off.

Upon digging further, she discovered that they had seen the cable car attraction from a video on Facebook. When the elderly couple showed her the video, she discovered that the whole video was AI-generated, and it even featured an AI ‘reporter’ talking about the cable car attraction.

“I explained to them that the video is only AI-generated and that it isn’t real. They said there’s no way people would cheat others like that especially when there’s even a reporter.”

She went on to further explain that she is from the area and she knows that there was no such cable car attraction there.

Finally convinced but heartbroken

Upon realising that there really wasn’t a cable car attraction, the elderly couple felt defeated and depressed.

“The elderly man asked his wife what they were going to do. I asked them why they didn’t check with their kids before coming, but they just said that they were embarrassed,” she added.

The elderly woman even suggested suing the ‘reporter’ in the video, but dyaaaaaaa._ pointed out that the reporter wasn’t real either.

“Then, the elderly woman said she wanted to sue the reporter in the video. I told her that the people in the video aren’t real people, that they are just digital. The elderly woman said, ‘Ishh, how could they create people like this‘.”

She has since called for people to be more aware of where their elderly parents are travelling to, to ensure they do not fall for AI-generated content.

You can check out the AI-generated video here.
