Well, this is an interesting turn of events!
It seems that our former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad signed a petition to free Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from prison, according to Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
According to the Malay Mail, the Deputy PM stated that Dr Mahathir signed the petition to atone for his past sins. He then went on to say that many people believed that the former prime minister allegedly framed Datuk Seri Anwar.
“Now that he is no longer in power he wants to compensate Anwar by signing the petition.”
Dr Mahathir reportedly signed the petition during Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s (PKR) annual national congress held last Saturday (20th May), along with his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
However, Datuk Seri Zahid disapproved of the petition because it isn’t the proper channel to go about releasing the imprisoned politician, who was sentenced to five years for sodomy.
“We are aware that Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in representing Anwar had appealed to the Pardons Board to grant clemency to Anwar.”
“That is probably more acceptable because it can determine the release of a person.”
During PKR’s annual national congress this past weekend, leaders and members gave their overwhelming support for Datuk Seri Anwar as the next prime minister.
If Pakatan Harapan were to win the upcoming GE14, his wife and current PKR president, Datuk Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will be interim Prime Minister, according to party vice-president, Rafizi Ramli.
