It’s customary for the state government to have their official vehicles which are often used for work trips. The Terengganu state government recently purchased 10 brand-new Mazda SUVs, and the image of the vehicles circulated online.

Terengganu state secretary Tengku Farok Hussin Abdul Jalil has recently downplayed concerns over the procurement of new SUVs for the menteri besar and state executive councilors.

“It’s a standard practice for the state government. It does not violate any rules or laws.”

“It’s to save cost, so don’t make it political”

Tengku Frarok Husin also told the media that the purchase of the SUVs, which was done in May 2023 is a necessity to save maintenance costs of the government’s official vehicles.

“The use of government-owned official vehicles is too high thus causing the maintenance cost to be burdensome.”

He also asked the public not to turn the purchase into a political matter because it was planned earlier this year, and has been approved following protocols and the administrative budget of the state government, reported Berita Harian.

He added that so far, all the new vehicles like the one that went viral have not been distributed.

“So the purchase of the new vehicle does not need to be politicized because it was approved.”

Tengku Faruk also mentioned the purchase of a 4-wheel drive vehicle for the Forestry Department, which no one disputed.

“It is customary for the state government to provide new vehicles to the head of departments, including the state Excos,” he explained.

Regardless, we hope the purchased vehicles will be put to good use and the luxury will not be abused.
