Celebrity doctor, Dr Shazril Shaharuddin has recently gone on to Instagram to talk about the importance of using condoms to prevent HIV transmission. But not everyone was happy about it.
Dr Shazril recently posted on his Instagram in conjunction with World AIDS Day discussing HIV/AIDS prevention and facts related to the disease in the Asia Pacific region where almost 280,000 are suffering from HIV.
He wrote,
“When we talk about sex, people usually shy away or feel that it’s taboo to talk about it on social media. But as we continue to disregard this topic, look what has happened. 280,000 are infected with HIV in the Asia Pacific region last year, and to be honest, I’ve lost several of my close friends to AIDS.”
But promoting the product and its importance didn’t go down well with several of the doctor’s followers.
Several of the respondents missed the point of the advertisement and pointed out that the doctor was actually promoting free sex.
One respondent wrote, “He’s Muslim, but limited in religious knowledge. He’s promoting adultery.”
Another respondent agreed, “But isn’t this promoting adultery? If you want to have sex just get married.”
Upset by the lack of open-mindedness among these people, a number of Dr Shazril’s followers showed their support for the intended message of the post.
One respondent wrote, “Are condoms only used when performing adultery? What about when a husband and wife use condoms to avoid infections?”
Another wrote, “Well said and true enough. Sadly in Malaysia, it is still taboo to talk about this topic.”
Dr Sharil’s viral post has since garnered 10,528 likes. What is your opinion on the matter? Shouldn’t condoms be promoted as a tool to prevent HIV transmission?
