The sacrifices made by medical staff to ensure the safety of not just their patients, but everyone else, continues to show the sheer lengths and willingness for these brave men and women to uphold their responsibilities. However, their solemn dedication to duty may come at a cost that some of us may not be ready to take on our own shoulders.
It has been recently reported by The New York Post that the director of a hospital in Wuhan, Dr Liu Zhiming, has been struck by the highly transmissible Covid-19 novel coronavirus and has since been hospitalised. However, earlier reports have suggested that the hospital director, who heads Wuchang Hospital in Wuhan, had passed away.
While a massive outpouring of grief has taken Chinese social media by storm, the statement of his death was then hastily retracted and replaced with another statement that claims that medical staff from his own hospital are racing against the clock to save his life.
Unfortunately, it has been reported by The New Straits Times that Dr Liu Zhiming has indeed passed away today (18th January 2020), after Chinese state television broke the announcement to the public.
For those who have been keeping track, this routine of conflicting reports surrounding notable members of deceased medical staff associated with the Covid-19 virus has happened previously with whistle-blower Dr Li Wenliang, who was said to have also been in critical condition after the initial announcement of his passing, before his death was confirmed.
As this is a progressing story, this article will be updated according to any information that is available to the press. We hope that Dr Liu Zhiming will be able to recover from his condition, despite the circumstances.
