7 people, including a baby girl, tragically lost their lives in a road accident involving multiple vehicles, including an MPV, a tour bus, and a lorry trailer, on the northbound lane of the North-South Expressway (PLUS) on December 23.
Anthony Loke shared his condolences and mentioned that initial investigations revealed the accident was caused by a lorry truck’s tyre coming off, which caused the tour bus to swerve into oncoming vehicles.
Police are working to obtain the dashcam footage
BERNAMA reported that the police recorded the statement of the 31-year-old lorry driver to figure out if there was any negligence that caused one of the lorry’s tyres to come off.
Alor Gajah District Police Chief, Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah, said tests showed the driver wasn’t under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
He also shared that the police are working to obtain dashcam footage showing the tyre on the highway, which has since gone viral.
The police are asking the owner of the video to come forward
Ashari is asking the owner of the vehicle that recorded the incident to come forward and help with the investigation, which falls under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Melaka Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Mohd Pisar Aziz shared that the crash tragically claimed the lives of 5 people in the MPV, including the driver, 2 men, 2 women, and a baby girl.
Khairul Ikhwan Mazupi’s dad, whose son was driving the MPV, said he trusts the police to carry out a thorough and fair investigation into the incident.
