Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Sungai Petani, Datuk Johari Abdul has been elected as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives after obtaining the highest number of votes of support from the Members of the House of Representatives.
According to Astro Awani, Johari has obtained the support of 147 votes while the candidate from the opposition, former MP for Kangar Tan Sri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad obtained 74 votes.
“I promise to fulfill my duties fairly and impartially as I have sworn earlier. Let’s be committed and work together, to drive and succeed in the direction of building the future of this beloved country,”
“Let us be determined to contribute to the well-being of the people as a whole,” Johari said.
Prior to his elected as Speaker of the House of Representatives, each MP was given a piece of paper to write down the name of the candidate that they support. The votes were then counted, showcasing Johari and the victor, as shared by Berita Harian.
This also comes after former Speaker, YB Tan Sri Azhar Azizan Harun, had allegedly stepped down from the role.
