Lockdowns and movement restrictions considered by governments across the world come as a strategy to battle the infectious Covid-19 virus as people are dying and families are suffering.

But through it all, there is one party that’s benefiting immensely from the lockdowns, and no, we don’t mean supermarkets.

Santiago Gasso (@SanGasso) took to his Twitter profile to showcase how much mother nature and our planet have been benefiting from the lack of human activity due to Italy’s Covid-19 lockdown, by comparing the sheer drop in Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) emission over the course of the past month.

He wrote, “In one month, there is a clear decrease of NO2 levels (a pollution marker) in northern Italy, as according to the satellite sensors.”

“Comparing images from single days is suggestive at best. For example, day selection is important, there is more activity during weekdays than on weekends. Here are 2 displayed weekend days, one month apart. The decrease is clear,” he added.

Unfortunately, the drop in Nitrogen Dioxide won’t help us heal the planet but it’s a good first step in helping mankind understand how to implement certain measures in their daily lives where everyone can play a part and contribute to saving our planet.

If we all take the initiative and work together, slowly but surely, we may be able to reverse some of the damages we’ve done.

Santiago Gasso’s posting has since garnered over 886 retweets.
