The Ministry of Communications and Digital (KKD) has today given the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) until June 2023 to resolve the service quality issues affecting telco companies in Malaysia. Its Minister, Fahmi Fadzil said that this is following frequent public complaints on internet access in certain areas.

According to BERNAMA, among the areas with poor internet access that Malaysians have lodged complaints on include inside buildings, along highways and even in certain stadiums. Fahmi hinted at the need for improvements to be made by telco companies and MCMC so that it would be fair to consumers. He asserted,

“Users are penalised for late payments of telephone bills by having their lines disconnected, but when service quality is not up to the mark, telecommunications companies don’t get the flak,”

The KKD Minister further stressed that there should be cooperation among telco companies through MCMC on areas that should be prioritised. For example, network access in-buildings would require certain equipment to be installed.

Besides that, Fahmi also revealed that his ministry would be focusing on solving internet network problems in our country, especially in the 3 per cent of populated areas involving the interior and Orang Asli villages. Most telco companies don’t install fibre networks in these areas due to the cost, hence KKD is looking into several ways to resolve the issue.

Satellite internet systems and other technologies may be used to circumvent this problem. The KKD Minister said that solving this issue is important as this 3 per cent that covers 3,000 areas in a population of 50 to more than 100 people each should be involved in the digital economy.
