Chinese Tourist Drowns in Sabah After Jumping into Sea Without Diving Instructor’s Permission

A Chinese tourist drowned in Semporna, Sabah, after diving into the sea without the diving instructor’s permission.

In a statement by the Semporna district Police Chief, Mohd Sabri Bin Zainol, said the police received a report about the matter yesterday (May 19) at around 6:45 PM, in which a 37-year-old Chinese diver drowned after diving into the sea at Sipadan Island.

The person who reported the matter, who is also the diving instructor, was leading 8 divers of different nationalities in the diving activity, including the Chinese tourist and his wife.

At around 10:45 AM, the Chinese diver jumped from the boat without the instructor’s permission and sank. 

The person who manned the boat informed the coach about the matter, who immediately dived into the waters and found the victim 25 metres below. He immediately performed CPR on the victim, who threw up on the boat.

However, he stopped responding afterwards and was rushed to the hospital in Tawau for immediate medical attention.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital upon arrival.

Sabri said PDRM has classified the case as a sudden death, and a post-mortem on the victim will be conducted today at 2 PM. The wife of the deceased was also on the boat during the incident.
