In an attempt to curb the spread of unverified videos related to the case of Zara Qairina Mahathir, Malaysian rapper @capricedaddycap recently highlighted a fake video that had gone viral, with many netizens mistakenly believing it was real.
Calling the act reckless, netizens began slamming the individual responsible for spreading false information, especially while the case is still under investigation.
The video which featured a damaged washing machine and photos of both the victim and the alleged culprits has garnered over two million views.
In his post, @capricedaddycap wrote, “Stop spreading fake videos, guys. In just five minutes, we found the original footage. This kind of reckless sharing will not bring us closer to truth and justice.”
Many netizens agreed with his statement.
“Don’t they know how dangerous it is to spread false information?”
“This is a washing machine video that happened in Singapore. Someone actually tried to wash a playpen in it,” said another user.
Cases like this, which can cause public confusion and disrupt official investigations, may be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588). The offence carries a maximum fine of RM500,000, up to two years’ imprisonment, or both.
If you’re unsure, don’t share it, everybody!
