We’re sure you’re familiar with the highly influential physicist, Professor Stephen Hawking, who changed the way laypeople and academics alike think about the universe in all of its mystery and wonder.
Now, according to BBC News, one of the greatest physicists of our time sadly passed on in the early hours of Wednesday (14th March). Hawking has been battling a rare motor neurone disease that left him paralysed and wheelchair-bound as a teenager, leaving him only able to communicate with others through a special computer.
Even still, his “robotic” voice influenced millions of people, and he managed to become an inspiring figure despite his obstacles.
According to The Guardian, news of Hawking’s death broke when his three children, Lucy, Robert and Tim, issued a statement, saying,
“We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world.”
“He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him for ever.”
Other influential scientists like Neil deGrasse Tyson recently took to Twitter to pay tribute to the late physicist in his own special way.
The scientific community has without a doubt suffered a big loss today. Our condolences go out to his family and all who knew him. Rest in peace, Professor Hawking.
