In this pandemic, medical professionals are subjected to even longer hours and overflowing wards. They are overworked and fatigued but they still try their best to provide the best healthcare for the people.
A nurse in Brazil by the name of Lidiane Melo was commended for her creative efforts to comfort a Covid-19 patient who is in the ICU. In an interview with Brazillian portal G1, Lidiane said that she was working during her shift when she found a patient’s hand to be very cold.
Following the textbooks, she used some orthopaedic cotton and bandages to wrap the patient’s hand. However, their circulation did not improve and Lidiane started to think of another way. She thought of wetting the patient’s hands with warm water but there is a risk of contamination. She thought about it a little more and the idea of filling up gloves with warm water came upon her.
The resulting warm glove ‘sandwich’ was able to simulate a comforting touch from a human. It managed to improve circulation and calm the patient down. The incident soon went viral and the method was nicknamed “The Hand of God”.
The Director-General of the World Health Organization said that it was simply incredible.
No words can express my admiration for #healthworkers on the frontlines in this pandemic and the incredible ways they are finding to comfort their patients. There’s so much we must learn from you and do to assist and protect you! #SupportHealthCareWorkers https://t.co/oyP5hqwXQ1
