At some point in your lives, while you were driving to work, you must have at least experienced the urge to scream at some motorbikes who were weaving in and out of traffic. Not all but some riders can be a nuisance on the road but sadly we tend to label every single one of them as rempits.

If you thought the judgement ends there, you’re wrong. We also assume that people who choose to ride motorbikes are poor and cannot afford to own a car. Teruk betul you all!

However, one Twitter user, Rushdi Amin, has tweeted that some people prefer riding bikes not because they cannot afford a car, but simply because it’s cost-efficient and easier.

He said,

“I just found out that a lot of people think that those who ride bikes to work belong to the lower income group. I prefer riding the bike because it’s fast, I can leave the house at 8am, pay only RM40 for fuel each month, not pay toll and still have extra cash to spend on food and movies at the end of the month.”

He also explained that although taking the car might be more comfortable, spending almost RM40 a week on toll is simply unacceptable. What made him sad was that people tend to stereotype bike riders as belonging to the lower income group.

One of his followers also pointed out that actually, those who ride bikes can still enjoy good food even though it’s only the middle of the month.

Another follower agreed with Rusydi, adding that she only pays RM5 for fuel weekly. That’s just RM20 per month! Murah gila weh! My Myvi also cannot lawan.

So, would you consider taking a bike to work now? If you do, you need to remember that the road can sometimes be very unforgiving for riders. Large vehicles tend to forget that they share the road with smaller ones; plus, you’ll also need to be wary of your surroundings, ride cautiously and be prepared for the rain!
