Khairul Aming’s Rembayung has opened its doors for over a week now, and its menu is not the only thing people are talking about.
Social media users, including some who have dined at the restaurant, are debating the food prices, particularly the ‘Telur Mata Kicap’ or soy sauce fried eggs, which are priced at RM15.90.

Some netizens even argued that it’s more cost-effective to buy the dish from a roadside stall or simply prepare it at home.
Khairul, known for directly addressing public inquiries, responded to the pricing concerns by explaining why his menu is priced differently compared to other eateries.
“The price goes beyond the plate”
In a recent TikTok livestream, Khairul said that many customers mistakenly believe dish prices are determined solely by the ingredients served. To clear the air, the celebrity chef took viewers on a quick tour of Rembayung while explaining the rationale behind his pricing.
He detailed that every dish, including the three-egg soy sauce meal, requires kitchen manpower for both preparation and table service. Furthermore, he highlighted overhead expenses like electricity, noting that Rembayung operates 18 air-conditioning units

These figures do not yet include other miscellaneous operating costs that contribute to the final price, which he noted were too numerous to list during the stream.
Khairul had previously been asked if his menu would be affordable for students; he explained that he could not give a definitive answer, as the perception of “student-friendly prices” has changed significantly since his own time as a student.
Based on the location and Khairul’s popularity, what do you think of the price?
