For one Malaysian couple, a 23-year age gap has never stood in the way of love.

Azmirullah Azan, 28, and his wife, Wan Nazihah Wan Awang, 51, have been happily married since 2019, proving that sincerity and mutual respect can outweigh age differences.

Simple desire to help turned into a romantic connection

The couple first connected in May 2019 through Facebook. What started as a casual online interaction quickly grew into something deeper. After getting to know each other for just three months, they decided to get married in August that same year.

Azmirullah, who lives in Gong Badak and is originally from Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, said their relationship developed naturally as they discovered how well they understood each other.

At the time, Wan Nazihah was a single mother of five children and running a business that had slowed down. Azmirullah initially offered to help her manage the business so she could rebuild it.

“My intention at first was just to help her get back on her feet,” he shared.

“But as time passed, our relationship grew closer, and we decided to get married. I believe it was meant to be,” he told Harian Metro.

No awkward feelings, family respects the decision

Despite their significant age difference, the couple said they have never felt awkward about their relationship. Azmirullah added that he is proud to be seen with his wife and often brings her along to gatherings and events.

“Sometimes people think I’m bringing my mother along, but that doesn’t bother me at all,” he said.

“She’s my wife, and I’m proud of that.”

The couple has also faced occasional criticism online, with some accusing Azmirullah of marrying Wan Nazihah for financial reasons. However, he dismissed such claims, explaining that he works alongside his wife and helps her run her gas distribution business.

Wan Nazihah, who lost her first husband to diabetes in 2014, spent five years raising her children on her own before meeting Azmirullah.
