Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook has announced that the Road Transport Department (JPJ) will be introducing the electronic driving test system (eTesting) starting 1 April 2024.
Finally rolling out after more than 2 years of planning by JPJ and the Transport Ministry, Loke lauded the new eTesting system as increasing the integrity of the evaluation process for driving licences in our country.
JPJ eTesting is finally here
In a press release, Loke said that through eTesting, candidates’ performance will be tested using sensors and cameras fitted on the JPJ test car without a JPJ officer sitting on the passenger seat. Furthermore, results will be generated in real time, further safeguarding the integrity of the driving test.
Currently, candidates can opt to either take eTesting or the regular driving test, with driving institutes allowed to only charge up to RM100 maximum for the former. Moreover, eTesting is only for the driving test at the circuit or practical course test (KPP02) currently.
Candidates get more benefits if they opt for eTesting
The Transport Minister added that should candidates opt for eTesting, they’ll be receiving several benefits, including:
- Candidates can retake each element of the driving test once on the same day should they fail without any additional cost
- For those retaking the test on the same day, they only need to retake the test element that they failed instead of the whole Part II test
- Candidates opting for eTesting will be given priority in the booking process of the driving test
- Successful candidates will get RM10 rebate for their Probationary Driving Licence or “P” licence
Accordingly, all driving institutes in the country are allowed to implement eTesting starting next month, with 3 driving institutes nationwide that have the eTesting system readily available.
These include the Institut Memandu Surfine Hitech in Hulu Langat, Pusat Latihan Memandu Berjaya Bhd in Ulu Tiram and Institut Lime Bintang Abadi Sdn Bhd in Penang.
All driving institutes are given 6 years to fully transition to eTesting
The Transport Ministry encourages all driving institutes to adopt eTesting, with a period of 6 years given for them to transition fully to the new system.
As for the rest of the theory test (KPP01) and practical on the road (KPP03), Loke said that the system is currently under evaluation before being implemented.
