The death toll caused by rabies in Sarawak have increased to 12 with the recent passing of a 49-year-old man. The victim died on Saturday (August 18) at 3.57pm at the Sarawak General Hospital.

Rabies have been declared an epidemic in the state since 30 June 2017! So, it is vital to take preventive measures to ensure no serious outbreaks could occur.

The health director-general, Dr Noor Hisham also confirmed that there is another 44-year-old patient from Kuching who is suffering from the illness after clinical samples were taken and tested.

Initially, upon going through the information that the hospital received, the man had no history of being bitten by a dog, but he was involved in an incident where he had hit a wild dog who attacked his wife on 13th January.

“At the time, the patient had an open wound on his right hand. It was reported that the dog later died,” he stated.

The hero who defended his wife took her to the hospital to be vaccinated but not for himself. He then began to suffer pain in the wounded hand and received outpatient treatment on August 6.

On August 11, the man’s condition got worse as he was experiencing numbness, weakness on the right hand, immobility, a stiff neck and hydrophobia.

Dr Noor Hisham has urged everyone to practice preventive measures against the epidemic! If you ever experience similar symptoms, quickly get yourself checked!
