The Ministry of Communications and Multimedia (K-KOMM) has guaranteed that Sabah will be given the top priority for the nation’s telecommunication development plans. IT Minister, Tan Sri Annuar Musa yesterday revealed that over RM1 billion had been allocated to implement various telecommunication programmes in the state, including the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA), Point of Presence (PoP) Project and the provision of broadband services in Sabah’s rural areas.
As reported by national news agency Bernama, Annuar made the assurance to Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor that K-KOMM will work hard and give the highest priority to the state in terms of telecommunication development. Annuar also stressed that his ministry will give full attention to the matter through programmes under the ministry and its agencies, as well as rope in telco companies.
In a separate development, the K-KOMM Minister also shared that the 4G coverage in Sabah has increased to 86.9% at its populated areas. Annuar attributed the achievement to the concerted efforts in strengthening broadband service infrastructure, especially through JENDELA.
However, while the K-KOMM Minister is satisfied with the progress under JENDELA, he wants all of its planned development projects such as new towers and upgrades of existing towers to be expedited. The ministry was also looking into several new technologies to ensure Internet network services reached all areas, including rural areas, in line with the goal of ensuring that the nationwide 4G network coverage reached 96.9 per cent by the end of this year.
