Fairytales always have roots in history and magic, and ever since we were children, we’ve always been told that certain things are just magic, which makes the concept of magic familiar to us.
With how tertiary education is mostly rooted in science and facts, one might think that magic has no place in it. However, a UK university, the University of Exeter, will offer a postgraduate degree in magic next year, reports BBC.
The full name of the course is Master of Arts in Magic and Occult Science, a 1-year programme that will begin in September 2024. It is said that the course was created due to a recent surge in interest in all things magic.
“A recent surge in interest in magic and the occult inside and outside of academia lies at the heart of the most urgent questions of our society,” said Prof Emily Selove.
She adds, “Decolonisation, the exploration of alternative epistemologies, feminism and anti-racism are at the core of this programme.”
This course will be offered under the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies:
“This MA will allow people to re-examine the assumption that the West is the place of rationalism and science, while the rest of the world is a place of magic and superstition.”
Career choices are plentiful, as this course is rooted in history, literature, philosophy, archaeology, sociology, psychology, drama, and religion, which will prove to be useful for those looking for jobs in teaching, heritage and museum work, work in libraries, tourism, arts organisations or the publishing industry just to name a few.
