During the past week, there was buzz surrounding the conversion rate widget on Google and how it made an error on March 15.

A few days ago, the widget disappeared and it led to many netizens making wild speculations. A quick search on the search engine at the time of writing has revealed that the widget is still unavailable.

The Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil has said that Google has disabled the widget for MYR searches as they are addressing technical issues.

He added that they informed him of this after discussions with Bank Negara Malaysia and they are doing so to avoid errors in the future when displaying MYR rates.

“There were indeed certain aspects that required rectification. However, we view this as a positive step forward as it is geared towards ensuring the integrity of Google’s data.”

The minister also said that the widget would be back after they have addressed all the issues, “I was informed that the RM exchange rate display will be restored once all the necessary processes by Google are finalised.”

While waiting for that to be completed, Fahmi urged everyone not to speculate, reported BERNAMA.

“I urge all parties not to propagate unfounded accusations or insinuate that Google’s action was influenced by any specific party.“
