A cultural haven in every sense of the word, nasi lemak has grown to become arguably the most popular dish in Malaysian society, with the item being regarded as our national dish. However, while we as locals love this staple in all its glory, the same can’t necessarily be said for those who come from different countries and are experiencing this delicious classic for the first time.

One Malaysian tour guide has garnered attention online after a clip of him was shared describing what nasi lemak is to a group of foreign tourists in Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur.

In a video captured by the store vendor of Nasi Lemak Seri Tanjak that was shared to the stall’s official page @nasilemaksritanjak, the tour guide accurately communicated what the dish is in its very essence.

“It consists of a scoop of coconut rice, a pinch of anchovies, fried peanuts, a slice of an egg, cucumbers, and a red spicy chilli paste we call sambal,” said the tour guide in the clip.

Holding a few packets in his hands for the tourists to look at, the guide continued by mentioning that the item can be eaten at virtually any time of the day, for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Inviting the group he had been leading to take a seat at the stall, the video ended with the tour guide informing them of other delicacies they’d be trying as well, including beef rendang and rose syrup.
