After recent turmoil which saw the country declaring bankruptcy, Sri Lanka is trying to kickstart its economy again, with one of the key measures being an emphasis on tourism.

These include attracting tourists from Malaysia, whereby the Indian Ocean island state yesterday announced that visitors from our country will be issued free visas.

As reported by Reuters, Malaysia is among 7 countries listed under a pilot programme announced by the Cabinet of the Sri Lanka government, whereby tourist visas will be waived until 31 March 2024.

The other countries selected under the pilot programme include China, India, Russia, Japan, Thailand and Indonesia.

A statement by the Sri Lanka Cabinet further elaborated that the scheme is part of the government’s attempts to boost tourism recovery, with the aim of attracting 5 million tourists by 2026.

Sri Lanka is famous globally for its beaches ancient temples and aromatic tea, with many international tourists also taking advantage of the recent favourable exchange rate to travel to the island.

However, Sri Lanka’s tourism industry was severely hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the financial crisis which saw nationwide protests and shortages of essentials such as fuel.

Previously, Malaysian tourists were required to get a visa on arrival in order to enter Sri Lanka, which costs at least USD20 or approximately RM96 and is valid for 30 days.

With the pilot programme, a visa on arrival is still required, only the fee is now waived by the Sri Lankan government.

So, what do you guys think of the free tourist visa for Malaysians visiting Sri Lanka? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
