On July 5, it was reported that customs intercepted shipments containing items from Indonesia and Malaysia in Taiwan. This is because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found that the imported items contain excessive pesticide residue and preservatives.

In its weekly report, it was said that the FDA had blocked several items. 5 of which are from Indonesia, and 1 item from Malaysia.

The 5 items from Indonesia include the famous instant noodle brand Mie Sedaap in 5 different flavours. The 5 different flavours are:

  • Mie Sedaap cup(chicken soup),
  • Mie Sedaap cup (baso special),
  • Mie Sedaap cup (dry Korean spicy chicken),
  • Mie Sedaap cup (Korean spicy chicken soup),
  • and Mie sedaap (spicy & sour soup)

The FDA had found excessive Ethylene oxide (pesticide) in the items.

Taiwan’s FDA official said: “The pesticide remains were most likely found in the seasoning packets and dried onions/shallots provided from the noodle packets.”

All shipments containing the Mie Sedaap noodles from Indonesia has since been rejected and returned, along with a report to the company’s top executives.

In regards to the item imported by Malaysia, it is understood that the item is a vegetarian tomyam paste. The item was rejected due to an unusual amount of preservatives.

In light of the huge amount of contamination, the Taiwan’s FDA mentioned: “Custom officials would increase their import checks from 5% to 20%.”

Be wary of the things you eat, everyone, it’s better to be safe than sorry!
