A case involving a 9-year-old girl in China recently went viral after she was caught stealing her friend’s safe during a visit.
According to the Chinese media, on August 15, Mr Lu’s daughter invited her friend Lucy (pseudonym), who is also their neighbour, over to their house to play.

She made use of the money to buy snacks
After Lucy went home, Mr Lu later noticed that the family safe was missing, containing about CNY20,000 (~RM11,761) in cash and three important documents tied to a debt dispute.
CCTV footage showed Lucy walking down the stairs instead of using the elevator, allegedly carrying the safe inside a bag. When confronted, she first claimed she had just thrown the safe away.

Police eventually tracked it down after a waste collector had picked it up, and the documents were also recovered from the trash.
During questioning, Lucy admitted she had smashed the safe open with a rock, spent some of the money on snacks. Mr Lu later noticed that the safe hadn’t been smashed with a stone but had instead been forced open with a tool.

She returned over 3,000 yuan to Mr Lu
Lucy eventually returned CNY2,000 (~RM1,176), and together with the CNY1,000 (~RM588) she had given her brother, just over CNY3,000 (~RM1,764) was recovered. However, Mr Lu insisted that Lucy still owed more than CNY17,000.
Lucy’s family denied that she had taken the full amount since there was no way to confirm it. Her father was convinced she didn’t steal as much as CNY20,000 and questioned why Mr Lu was blaming her for all the missing money, especially since the safe had been carted away by a waste collector.
Later on, Lucy’s father apologised on her behalf and said he was willing to discuss compensation for the stolen cash, as reported by another Chinese media.
