80yo M’sian Uncle Single-Handedly Transforms Empty PJ Sidewalk into a Flowering Paradise

@patricklee_msia, a media freelancer with 15 years of experience, took to TikTok to share a heartwarming story about an 80-year-old known as a sidewalk gardener, who plants beautiful flowers along the sidewalks near his home in Petaling Jaya.

True to his name as a sidewalk gardener, Uncle Andrew shared that after retiring, he kept himself occupied by picking up gardening as a hobby.

Lavandrew Avenue

Uncle Andrew’s passion for gardening grew so much that he eventually took his work to the sidewalk, as his yard had no more space left for his projects.

Patrick captioned the post, saying,

“Uncle Andrew jokes that his garden has earned the nickname ‘Lavandrew Avenue’ thanks to all the lavender-coloured flowers he grows.”

“People in Malaysia throw rubbish wherever they like”

He explained that 20 years ago, the sidewalk was just a plain pathway littered with rubbish.

“I cleared away the rubbish and started my gardening there. I do everything by hand, trimming the bushes, weeding the garden, and sweeping the floor.”

He also noted that while many Malaysians tend to throw rubbish everywhere, they usually avoid littering in areas filled with flowers and plants.

He doesn’t see himself as anyone special

Uncle Andrew believes that people generally prefer being in green spaces, and he feels that nature can have a calming effect, especially in busy cities.

“It brings me great joy to see people walking by my garden in the morning. Whenever they compliment it, it makes me happy.”

He doesn’t see himself as anything special but instead, he’s simply trying to add a touch of green beauty to his neighbourhood and city.

Uncle Andrew has earned praise from a lot of netizens, prompting them to say their thanks for his kind gesture.
