In Malaysia, we are blessed with lots of awesome things. Good food, friendly people (most of the time) and a nice tropical weather that most foreigners would kill for. This tropical weather however, does come with its disadvantages as well.
One of them being the horror of supremely heavy rain. ‘Raining cats and dogs’ can’t even begin to describe what we go through sometimes.
Here’s a bunch of things that all Malaysians who have ever been caught unaware by the ‘hujan lebat’ can definitely relate to.
1. When your shoes get wet (especially when you’re wearing socks)

The icky feeling of water in between your toes is not pleasant at all! Having no choice but to be in wet socks is even worse. More often than not, whenever you’re trying to avoid puddles, you’ll always somehow end up getting your shoes wet anyway… *sigh*

3. Having to pay extra if you’re using a ride-hailing service
Hello, peak hour traffic. It’s as if everyone chooses the exact same time as you to take a ride home. Usually, this is the typical scenario:
- See price increase
- Wait for a bit to see if price will go down
- Price does NOT go down
- End up paying the expensive fee anyway ‘cos all you want to do is get out of the miserable weather.
4. Being stuck in an EXTRA long jam
For those of us who drive to get to places, as soon as it starts pouring slightly, you’re basically already preparing yourself mentally. Still, when the rain starts coming down heavier as the minute goes by, we all know that we’re going to be stuck in traffic for an even longer period. FML.

5. Feeling as if you’re suddenly in Genting Highlands when you take public transport
For those who take public transport regardless of what the weather is like, you have the added dilemma of having to make it through a very ‘chilly’ ride.
Certain modes can get quite cold and if you’re caught unprepared, it can actually be a horrible experience as your teeth will be chattering non-stop. Brrr.
6. When you wonder if you should even bother using an umbrella at all

There comes a point when you’re stuck in the massive ‘hujan lebat’ and you have to decide on what sort of action to take. For example, when the wind starts blowing water in all directions and the question you’d ask yourself is, “Do I stick with my umbrella or not bother at all?”
I mean, what’s the point if it’s gonna be blown by the strong wind and you end up getting wet anyway right?
7. When you end up stranded and are too ‘kedekut’ to do anything about it
If you’ve gone out to makan with colleagues and walked to where you needed to get to and it starts pouring, chances are, you won’t be moving any time soon. Calling for transport doesn’t make sense since you’re not that far away from the place. Also you’re just super cheap. Broke ma.
So, what makes sense is to just wait it out at where you’re stranded, at least until you’ve figured out that it’s been wayyyyy too long since you’ve been there. At least you can let your food coma settle too.
8. Feeling like you’re in a movie scene

It’s a movie scene that we’re all familiar with. Man (or woman) going against the elements. Detailing the epic struggle of battling the stormy nature around you. It becomes even more like the movies when you see things like scarves and plastic bags flying around you. Things can get quite dramatic when you’re caught in the middle of the rain but luckily, it’s not a hurricane. Phew!

The Hurricane Heist tells the story of Casie who has to protect herself against a crew of thieves looking to steal $600 million from a US treasury facility. Add in a Category 5 Hurricane and you’ve got yourself a gripping disaster action movie that’s going to have you on the edge of your seat. Oh, did we mention that there’s some pretty cool car chase scenes too?
