Raya is just around the corner and that means the much-anticipated Ramadan bazaars are back! That being said, there are going to be hundreds of stalls open during this period, selling all sorts of delicious food. With so many things to choose from, it’s important to strategise which bazaars we visit and what we get, especially since Ramadan bazaars are only around for a limited time. So if you wanna know what the MUST-try foods this year are, take note of these:
1. The rich and tangy Pulut Udang

Made from glutinous rice stuffed with sambal kelapa (coconut sambal) and prawns, the pulut is wrapped in a banana leaf before being steamed into a scrumptious snack. If you’re unsure where to get some pulut udang, give Zakri Tomirin’s stall in TTDI a try. His recipe is also extremely unique as it was inherited from his grandfather. Every single pulut udang is made in his Setapak home and he sells over 700 of them each day with each costing about RM0.90 only.
2. A sweet and affordable treat: Tepung Pelita
A popular dessert that’s usually hard to come by outside of the festive Ramadan and Raya period, Tepung Pelitas. Made from coconut milk and rice flour wrapped in banana leaves, this rich dessert will leave you craving for more. If you’re unsure where to get some, Tepung Pelita Warisan in TTDI is a good bet.
3. Get the best of both worlds with this unique Macaroni Bakar
Similar to the Murtabak Maggi, the Macaroni Bakar is another must-try combination that will surely leave a lasting impression on you. It’s a mixture of meats and carbs and all things tasty plus, it costs less than RM5 at Bandar Baru Sentul.
4. Roti Jala + Murtabak = Rojabak
One of the most well-known food items in certain bazaars, the Rojabak is basically every Malaysian’s dream come true. As you can probably tell by the name, this delicious hybrid is basically made up of your everyday roti jala which is then fused with the insides of a murtabak. It’s genius! Instead of buying extra side dishes, you already have curry and meat INSIDE your roti jala. YUM! You can give this treat a try at Bangsar’s Ramadan bazaar.
5. The Raya staple: Lemang and Rendang
While this dish isn’t necessarily found in Ramadan bazaars, it is one of the must-eat foods during Raya. Commonly found by the roadside, you’ll be able to spot rows and rows of bamboo being cooked fresh every single day over a fire. The lemang from Jalan Suadamai, Cheras is said to be a crowd favourite as the glutinous rice is soft, sticky, and extremely fragrant. You can pair it with their beef rendang which the stall also sells. The lemang will cost you between RM12 and RM18 depending on how much you bungkus.
6. A comforting bowl of Bubur Lambuk

A hearty bowl of porridge made with coconut milk, spices, minced meat, and condiments, a bowl of bubur lambuk makes for the perfect dish if you’re looking for something to warm you up. Give the one in Kampung Baru a try.
7. Baklava for all you pastry lovers out there
For those of you who have a sweet tooth, this is the dessert for you! Baklava, a dessert pastry made up of many fluffy layers laced with honey and topped with nuts, is a simple yet highly addictive dessert. It’s impossible to have just one. In fact, this particular dessert is not as common as your usual kuih-muih, so if you want some, make sure you drop by Bukit Bintang’s Ramadan bazaar.
