A senior citizen was just sentenced to 12 years in jail and two strokes of the cane after he had pleaded guilty to “having intercourse” with an 11-month-old baby.
According to the New Straits Times, the 68-year-old reportedly committed the crime in Shah Alam at 4pm on 20th August 2018. He was the father-in-law of a babysitter who was looking after the 11-month-old. However, the babysitter asked him to take care of the baby while she left to renew her car insurance and road tax.
When the babysitter came back, she noticed the baby could not stop crying and had blood stains on her trousers. She immediately informed the child’s parents, who went to the Shah Alam hospital for treatment.
Doctors from the hospital’s obstetrician and gynaecology department found wounds and redness in the baby’s vagina and that her hymen was permanently torn.
It was suspected that a blunt object, penis, or finger probably caused this painful injury.
As the police investigated this case, the babysitter’s father-in-law confessed to his son that he had inserted his finger in the baby’s vagina and had sexually assaulted her.
He was then charged under Section 377CA of the Penal Code. Deputy Public Prosecutor Aimi Syazwani Sarmin told the Special Court on Sexual Crimes against Children during today’s (4th September) proceedings,
“The specialist has confirmed that the victim has sustained a permanent tear to the hymen.”
“The 68-year-old suspect, who is old enough to be a grandfather, had committed this heinous act when he should have taken care of the child. His act will have a deep impact and cause serious damage to the child.”
“Even though the suspect is 68 years old, strokes could still be carried out under the law for sexual offenders. Therefore, I appeal to the court to impose maximum penalty to the suspect as it involves public interest, as well as a deterrent factor and to show the seriousness of the crime.”
We’re glad that this man has been sentenced to jail and hope that the baby and her family can safely recover from this traumatic ordeal in peace.
