After the news of a police officer asking brazenly for a bribe from a British couple, more similar cases have emerged.
According to BERNAMA, 5 police officers were detained for allegedly extorting money from a factory worker in Permatang Tinggi on 2 February.
The Penang police chief, Datuk Khaw Kok Chin, says that the officers were arrested after the factory worker, a 27-year-old man, had reported the extortion case.
It is said that the factory worker was driving a lorry when 2 police MPVs stopped him. 3 policemen came out to inspect the lorry, and in a short while, one of them said that they had found a plastic bag that contained suspected drugs.
The factory worker denied that the plastic belonged to him, but the policemen insisted that it belonged to him.
Suddenly, another MPV came, and 2 policemen came out of the car. They said that if the lorry driver wants to avoid going to jail, he has to pay them a total of RM10,000.
After some back and forth, they reduced the amount to RM4,500 and asked the driver to withdraw the money from a bank nearby.
The factory worker followed their instructions and handed them the cash before lodging a report.
Datuk Khaw Kok Chin says this matter will be investigated under Section 384 of the Penal Code, and the policemen will be remanded for 4 days.
“We will investigate the matter without fear or favour. We will not compromise on any personnel or officers involved in any wrongdoing.“
