Recently, a 34-year-old Malaysian named Malathi Saravanan took to Facebook to share the struggles that she and her furbabies have been facing during this pandemic.

In her post, the mother of almost a hundred furkids, who is an independent rescuer, shared her frustrations by saying that she is struggling financially to feed her existing furkids on top of caring for 30 other strays. Malathi is also struggling to pay her rent after recently losing her job.

“My friend Courtney and I take care of all of them with the help of her mother and brother who normally handle everything at home. We focus on rescuing paralysed, old, and special needs furkids.”

“Normally we will post to the public and ask for help for the vet bills as most of the time the surgeries will cost thousands for those rescued with major fractures and if not enough funds are received, we will use whatever money we have or left to cover everything and take good care of them,” she told WORLD OF BUZZ.

“We are not a shelter but we rented a house big enough to keep them happy with a lot of space for them to run and everything.”

“What am I going to do? I don’t know. If get evicted I don’t mind living on the streets but where would the furkids go? I don’t know also. This post is not to create sympathy but to explain what I’m really going through and I really don’t want to.”

Losing her job & struggling to pay rent

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, Malathi shared that she has been rescuing strays for over six years. Previously, she had a job in the event industry but due to the pandemic, she lost the only job she had. Nevertheless, she tried finding other alternatives to make ends meet.

“I was working in the events industry and was doing some freelancing too. With that, I’ve been managing everything. But four months ago, I lost my job and things got very difficult with all the lockdowns and MCOs.”

“We were struggling to make ends meet. So I was doing pet taxi services as a part-time job and was kind of earning with running errands. We also did grooming services and with all those earnings, we tried to manage rent. Not forgetting the kind donations offered by people when I post,” she told WORLD OF BUZZ.

“But no matter what struggle or challenge comes my way, I have never given up on any of my rescues. I do all I can to make the strays lives better.”

Whenever she has spare change, she will save the money to neuter the stays.

“I spay/neuter and release the strays as well. As this totally depends on how much I can spare. I would usually do three to five furkids every month.”

Malathi added that this month, she attempted to settle her outstanding rent payment, which costs RM2,900 but unfortunately, she is short of RM2,000.

Her sole focus is the wellbeing of her furkids and she worries about the risk of being evicted, which means all the strays that she has been rescued would go back to living on the streets.
