The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA), along with customs officials at the Schiphol airport in Amsterdam, seized 105 kgs of baby eels, that were found to be stuffed in 8 suitcases of 3 Malaysian passengers.
They were in transit from Portugal to Malaysia when the eels were discovered.
Based on a report by NVWA, the luggage attracted the attention of Schiphol security employees, in which customs then found bags filled with water and the eels. The NVWA were involved as the eels are believed to be glass eels, which are protected in Europe.
The Netherlands authorities hunted the passengers down and arrested 2 men and a woman from Malaysia.
A report by Dutch News shares that the EU had banned the sale of glass eels outside of their waters in 2010, as 23% of the European glass eel population end up being trafficked to Asia. The eels found in the suitcases have since been released into Dutch waters.
