An influencer from China flew to Cambodia two weeks ago, and when she was scheduled to return on 13 November, the woman was unreachable and nowhere to be found.

The influencer, however, is still alive and in huge trouble, but not for the reasons you might expect.

She was arrested for multiple scams and human trafficking

The influencer, 26-year-old Zhang Mu Chen, lost contact with her family on 12 November. Her phone was switched off, and there were no records of her entering or leaving the country.

Unexpectedly, the latest court documents reveal that she is accused of participating in multiple fraud cases between October and November, and is also suspected of assisting in cross-border human trafficking, with related funds even flowing into accounts under her name.

Zhang previously said that she would be visiting Sinahoukville in Cambodia to meet her boyfriend.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court formally charged the defendant under the country’s Article 11 of the Law on Combating Trafficking in Persons and Sexual Exploitation and Articles 377 and 380 of the Criminal Code.

A detention order was issued on 15 November, transferring her to prison to await trial, as reported by The Cambodia China Times.

The Cambodian authorities confirmed to the media on 19 November that Zhang was arrested on 13 November.

Her boyfriend, nicknamed “Brother Long”, who is also a suspect in the case, is still at large

At the time of writing, Zhang’s social media accounts have been shut down, with the accounts’ homepage stating “banned.”

Earlier, Zhang posted the tidbits of her moments in Cambodia, sparking concerns among her followers, who told her to be careful in the country.
