Malaysians the world over remember how tragedy struck on the 11th of December 1993, when a landslide caused the Highland Towers, an apartment building to collapse, killing 48 people.

Now, there is a big possibility of a recreational park being built in place of the infamous Highland Towers, where tragedy struck 25 years ago.

According to an article by Sinar Harapan, Minister of Housing and Local Government Zuraida Kamaruddin, has stated that The Highland Towers Redevelopment Committee met about five times in order to identify a number of issues involving the site, including the legal implications of a new development.

She has mentioned that she is aware that while the site is not entirely suitable for a construction project (given its tragic history and the land stability) the committee has not ruled out the possibility of repurposing the land for a family-friendly recreational park instead!

Kamaruddin told the press, “The site that is not suitable for construction projects, and may be changed into a park instead.

“The members of the community around Ampang area can come to the park and use it… This is all in its planning stages,” she said after a meeting at the Girl2leader launch program at Hotel Corus here, today.

Back in June, she mentioned that there were plans for a construction project which would see a housing project built for the B40 group at the site of the collapsed Highland Towers condominiums. The Highland Towers Redevelopment Committee was also created to conduct land acquisition and see to the redevelopment of the Highland Towers site.

Given this latest development, looks like Malaysians could be expecting a new park instead!

Perhaps this scar in Malaysian history can finally begin its healing with a beautiful park.
