A Mexican beauty influencer, Valeria Marquez, was shot to death during a livestream from her beauty salon on Tuesday (May 13). She was only 23.

During her live stream on TikTok, Valeria was seen excitedly unboxing a package she received from a deliveryman and revealing the stuffed animal to live viewers. As she was looking into the distance with a concerned expression, Valeria was fatally shot.

Seconds before her death, a man outside asked if she was Valeria, to which she said, “Yes.”

A man appeared in her livestream before it was turned off

The live stream continued momentarily even after her death, and it only stopped when a man, who briefly showed his face, turned off the video.

According to the state of Jalisco’s Attorney General’s office, Valeria was shot dead by a male intruder in her salon. The case is currently being investigated as femicide – the killing of a woman or girl for gender-based reasons, as reported by CNN.

According to a spokesperson for the Jalisco Prosecutor’s Office, the man accused of committing the crime showed up at the site of the murder before Valeria had arrived and asked for her. He returned to the salon later that day, which is when the murder occurred, as recorded in the video, the spokesperson said.

The name of the suspect, however, has not been revealed, and the office denied claims about the death being related to the drug cartels, despite Jalisco being known for drug-related violence, according to the US Department of Justice.

State security coordinator Roberto Alarcon also said that investigators had found no evidence that a criminal group was behind the shooting.

She was shot twice

Officials stated two men on motorcycles came to the salon, with one confirming her identity before shooting her twice. All security footage is currently being reviewed for clues.

In a press conference yesterday (May 15), Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that her security cabinet was investigating Valeria’s murder along with the public prosecutor’s office.

“Our solidarity goes out to her family in this situation.”
