A Deepavali celebration in Kedah turned tragic when a fireworks explosion injured several people early this morning.
A total of 22 individuals were hurt in the incident at Paya Besar around 12:45 AM, including one who suffered a serious injury to the forehead.

The large crowd gathered to watch the fireworks display
According to Sinar Harian, Kulim District Police Chief Superintendent Zulkifli Azizan said the incident happened while a crowd had gathered in the area to watch fireworks.
He said all 22 victims were injured, but only one suffered a serious 5-centimetre cut on the forehead. The rest had minor burns and scratches caused by firework residue on their bodies and hands.
He added that the police received initial information about the incident while officers were on a crime prevention patrol between 9 PM and 2 AM on Monday (October 20).

Zulkifli said two ambulances were sent to the scene to provide first aid to the victims.
He added that traffic was brought under control after the crowd dispersed once the injured were taken to Kulim Hospital.
“Officers were alerted to traffic congestion caused by the large crowd in the area. Additional MPV and URB patrol units were deployed to manage the situation, and when the backup team arrived, they found several people injured by fireworks,” he said.
