Results of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia 2022 were announced earlier this month and saw 10,109 candidates obtain straight As and an improvement to the National Average Grade as compared to the previous year.
While the overall results were encouraging, if we were to look at trends from previous years, not all SPM leavers would be furthering their studies. Previously, the Education Ministry revealed that nearly half of SPM students from 2021 chose to not continue their studies.
For the SPM 2022 batch, the P-Hailing Organisation of Malaysia claims that almost 20% of them would be working as delivery riders.
As reported by Malay Mail/Utusan Malaysia, the organisation’s deputy president Abdul Hakim Abdul Rani said that this is due to financial constraints.
Abdul Hakim said that SPM 2022 leavers are likely to take up jobs in the gig economy before their acceptance into universities and some may even continue to work even after getting into higher education institutes.
He asserted,
“It is the job of the parents to ensure their kids get a good education but the SPM leavers must be aware of their families’ plight. Times are tough and people are struggling to make ends meet.
“I’m sure we will see an increase of around 20 per cent of registrations for p-hailing and that’s due to the times. Things are difficult, people are struggling for money resulting in them not continuing their studies after SPM,”
Previously, a study conducted by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) revealed that 39.54%of p-hailing workers had only an education level of SPM or SPM Vocational, the highest percentage.
