Feeling scared is only natural. It’s an emotion that allows us to get our guard up for a ‘fight or flight’ mode if danger presented itself. But more often than not, we also find ourselves panicking over things that do not pose a threat to us – hence, irrational fears.
Here are 15 of them that most Malaysians unfortunately (but also amusingly) experience:
1. Seeing a police roadblock
Even when you did absolutely nothing wrong – no drinks, no drugs, super clean. Yet, seeing these men in uniform triggers an alarm in all of us.
2. Going through metal detectors at the airport/mall
At the back of your mind, you feel like these are just waiting to set off right as you go through it.
3. When your mom calls you by your full name
…Even though you’re already over 20 years old.
4. When someone starts the conversation with “Can I ask you something?”
You know your mind would just raced through every little thing that this person could possibly want to ask you.
5. People honking and you internally panic that it might’ve been at you
6. ANY noise when you’re home alone
…especially at night
7. Driving behind this big truck
One of these pipes is going to break lose and impale my poor body at any time now.
8. Losing control of your car during a heavy rain even though you’re only driving at 50km/h
You can never be too careful!
9. Walking across a sidewalk grate and possibly falling to your impending doom
10. In your younger days, you wonder what you’d do if your parents weren’t around
11. That shaky ceiling fan when it’s turned on high
Thinking that it will finally detach itself from the ceiling and turn the place into one of the scenes in Final Destination movie.
12. Two words: Air turbulence
I know air turbulence is normal. But what if this time we’re gonna crash and burn?
13. Looking in a mirror past midnight thinking you’ll catch something scary
14. Wonder if you might be chronically ill
Especially when you’re experiencing minor symptoms like cough, sore throat, headache and start to wonder if you may be suffering from cancer or a chronic disease. I mean, who knows right???
15. Failing
Whether it’s trying out new experiences, getting injured during sports, starting a business or even taking an exam, the constant fear that we may fail is unwarranted, especially when it hinders us from moving forward.
Irrational fears are an odd thing because when we really think about it, there no reason for us to be afraid in the first place. Like the saying goes, there’s nothing to fear but fear itself.
Sometimes, we have to stand our ground and muster up the boldness to confront our fears. Because the truth is, courage never fails.
