Many of us have definitely had those ‘gatal tangan‘ moments whenever a blackhead or pimple pops up on our faces unannounced.
Squeezing, poking, and popping might seem like a tempting and quick solution to rid ourselves of these blemishes, but they can actually be very dangerous to your health. That’s a lesson this poor girl and her family learnt the hard way!
A few weeks ago in Guangzhou, China, a woman helped squeeze the blackheads out of her 10-year-old daughter’s nose, according to the Daily Mail.
However, not long after that, the young girl soon started having a fever and felt dizzy and drowsy. Her family thought she just had a case of the flu, and so did their local doctor. Sadly, things became even worse last week when she started experiencing bad headaches, loss of appetite and even began vomiting.
She was taken to a bigger hospital after her symptoms worsened. A neurosurgeon at the hospital reportedly said that the young girl was almost unconscious when she arrived.
It was then discovered that the 10-year-old experienced very high pressure in her skull likely caused by a build-up of pus and other material in the brain due to a bacterial or fungal infection.
An MRI scan later confirmed that there was pus collected at one part of her skull along with an abscess in her brain.
She reportedly suffered from a Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) – also known as a “superbug” – infection. This bacteria is reportedly resistant to several widely used antibiotics and is much harder to treat.
Without wasting any more time, the doctors quickly performed emergency surgery on the young girl and removed the abscess, part of her skull, along with 8 milliletres of pus.
The doctor, who wanted to understand how the 10-year-old girl contracted such a dangerous infection, asked her family questions regarding their lifestyle.
It was then that he discovered that her mother squeezed blackheads on her nose without washing her hands first!
The area between the nose and mouth is apparently referred to as the “dangerous triangle” because blood vessels in this region are directly connected to the brain. So, if one were to squeeze blackheads or pimples (especially with unsanitised hands) in this area, they could be at risk of getting a severe bacterial infection like this poor girl!
Well, we’re glad this young girl got treated in time and hope she makes a swift recovery.
Meanwhile, let’s all take this as a lesson and never pop our pimples and blackheads no matter how tempting it feels!
