10-year-0ld Mavis from Selangor has taken to her YouTube channel to share her grief with everyone after losing her grandfather to Covid-19 in January.
Mavis, who creates video content on her YouTube channel called, ‘M&M Channel’ with her younger sister Megan, took to her platform to share the story of her grandfather’s passing after a close friend of his did not disclose his positive coronavirus status to anybody.
Right at the beginning of the video, Mavis gave a quick heads up to her viewers by explaining that this particular video, titled ‘Our Coronavirus Experience – A True Story’, will not be like the other videos that she has posted on her channel.
She then began to explain the whole story which all started after her grandfather’s good friend had invited him out to drink tea on New Year’s Eve.
“However, that close friend didn’t tell my grandfather that he went for a Covid-19 test a few days before they met. He didn’t tell him anything at all about the screening,” Mavis explained.
Her expressions in the video made many viewers reach for tissues as it was clear that she was still grieving. It was so heartbreaking.
Mavis then explained how disappointed she felt that her grandfather’s close friend did not take the initiative to inform them about his positive results which he got the very next day, 1 January. She called him irresponsible for not taking the matter draconianly.
Days later, on 4 January, her grandfather started to feel unwell. Although he had visited the clinic a couple of times with the symptoms of flu, back pain, and chills, doctors failed to refer him for a Covid-19 swab test, said Mavis.
On 11 January, Mavis explained that her mother finally brought her grandfather to a private hospital’s emergency department to get the Covid-19 swab test done. Doctors at the hospital found that her grandfather had pneumonia and immediately admitted him.
The very next day, his condition worsened and he was rushed to the intensive care unit (ICU), where he was placed on a ventilator.
When they finally confirmed that her grandfather was positive for Covid-19, he was then transferred to Sungai Buloh Hospital, where her 78-year-old grandfather battled the disease for 18 days before passing away.
“I still don’t understand how irresponsible my grandfather’s friend and that doctor can be,” she said.
“He was admitted to the private hospital for four days, and we spent RM50,000 on his hospitalisation fees while waiting for a bed at Sungai Buloh Hospital. We didn’t get a chance to see him again. And we tried to video call but there wasn’t any signal there,” she cried.
After finding out her grandfather tested positive for Covid-19, her entire family got themselves screened as well.
“My grandmother, my little sister, my cousin, and two uncles also tested positive for Covid-19 in January,” she said.
Mavis then urged viewers to be more socially responsible during the pandemic, emphasizing the importance of staying at home and avoiding physical contact with people if they feel unwell or test positive for the virus.
“My grandfather was a good man. He was the best person in the world. He always cooked my favourite dishes and brought me out to eat good food. He would also always help to blow-dry my hair after I shower,” she added.
Mavis asked her viewers to share the video so that more people could be more aware of the incident and learn from it.
Our condolences to Mavis and her family. May her grandfather rest in peace.
