Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi revealed a rather interesting fact regarding our country’s Halal industry in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday (18 July), specifically regarding companies that obtained the Halal certification from the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM)
Taking the floor in Parliament, Zahid revealed that the majority of companies that obtained the Halal certification are owned by non-Bumiputera.
How the Government is planning to strengthen the nation’s Halal industry
The Deputy Prime Minister was replying to a question by Kuala Pilah Member of Parliament (MP) Dato’ Adnan Abu Hassan who wanted to know the Government’s plans to strengthen the halal industry for SMEs, Bumiputera companies, companies in rural areas and young entrepreneurs in line with the target to make Malaysia the leading force in the global Halal industry.
Accordingly, Zahid asserted that to improve the Halal industry in our country, among the matters looked at is the structure of the industry itself, including the Halal certification process, the management of Halal talents, the national Halal policy, the Halal development plan and the Halal marketing plan.
A majority of Halal certifications are obtained by companies owned by non-Bumiputeras
The Deputy Prime Minister then revealed that as of July 2024, 9,146 companies had obtained the Halal certification from JAKIM.
Of the total, 5,270 companies or 57.6% are owned by non-Bumiputeras, while Bumiputeras own 3,616 or 39.6%.
Furthermore, 8,105 out of the total are SMEs, while 1,041 are multinational companies.
Zahid added that the Government through the Halal Industry Master Plan 2030 has outlined a core strategy focused on encouraging increased participation and competitiveness from Bumiputera-owned companies.
Moreover, the Halal Development Corp has carried out various efforts, including development programmes involving local companies so that Bumiputera companies can venture into the Halal sector.
