Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has revealed that the government is planning to formulate an act to provide social security protection to e-hailing workers.
According to the national news agency BERNAMA, the matter had been discussed between himself and Human Resources Minister V. Sivakumar but needs to be refined so as to meet the needs of employers and employees.
Zahid Hamidi elaborated, “The act must be satisfactory to all parties. What is important is that it (the new act) will safeguard their (e-hailing workers) future.”
He further asserted that the act may take some time as it involves the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) and input from several non-governmental organisations (NGO) and associations involving the e-hailing industry.
In the meantime, the Deputy Prime Minister urges e-hailing workers to be protected not only with insurance but also with perks and benefits.
Zahid Hamidi said that the new law must be studied to safeguard gig workers as the industry is relatively new and boomed after the Covid-19 pandemic when some people had to quit their jobs or were laid off.
He stressed that reskilling is also necessary and that the government should direct them to fields that fit their qualifications and experiences so that social security protection can be provided to them.
