The Covid-19 pandemic situation is worsening day after day. Malaysia just recorded a total of 428 cases with a jump of 190 cases just yesterday (March 15th). To stay safe, everyone has been advised to avoid mass gatherings, to wear your masks and also to wash their hands. There have been cases, however, of people going overboard with their hygiene practices to a point where it causes more harm than good.
A Taiwanese woman almost damaged her cornea when she rubbed her eyes with her hands that were doused with sanitiser containing alcohol. China Press reported that the woman, Zhuang, said her eyes were dry and that she has a bad habit of rubbing her eyes. After spraying her hands with the sanitiser, she subconsciously rubbed her eyes without realising that her hands were still wet.
For a while, she didn’t feel anything but some time passed and she started to feel some tingling in her eyes. Zhuang immediately rinsed her eyes out with some water but even after that, they were still sore. She rushed to the hospital and after checking, her corneas appeared to be inflamed. Fortunately, her eyes got better after using some anti-inflammatory creams.
Doctors have reminded us that during this outbreak, it’s important that you don’t touch your face as the virus can enter your body through the mouth, nose and eyes. Also, touching your face before the disinfectant has evaporated may cause inflammation and allergies!
Remember that hand sanitisers should only be used when you have no access to water. Otherwise, WASH YOUR HANDS! Stay safe everyone.
