In a recent video reshared on Instagram, a mother was seen teaching her young daughter to drive. While it appears as a harmless parenting moment, many netizens weren’t too happy about it because of how young her daughter looked.
In the clip, recorded in Indonesia, the girl, who seems way too young to drive, is sitting on her mother’s lap, steering the wheel while her mother takes care of the pedals.
“My Instagram, my choice”
The video sparked a wave of backlash, with many netizens slamming the mother for letting her kid take over the steering wheel and teaching her to drive at such a young age.
In response to the criticism, Kompas reported that the parent defended her actions in a post, explaining that it was done in their residential area during office hours when the streets were quiet.
“The area is rarely busy, and if anyone does pass by, I immediately take control of the steering wheel. I know the environment of my complex better than anyone, especially during office hours. Besides, the handbrake is there for a reason if needed.”
She also added that she took over the steering wheel immediately whenever someone passed by.
“My kid got bored after just 5 minutes. If you don’t like it, feel free to skip the video. Go ahead and criticise me if you want, but the consequences are on you. Whether I upload this or not is entirely my choice since it’s my Instagram, my platform, and my decision.”
“It’s too dangerous for a child”
In an interview with Kompas, Marcell Kurniawan, the Training Director of The Real Driving Centre (RDC), addressed the issue and pointed out how dangerous it is for a child.
“The kid could lose control and crash into another car or something nearby. If the airbag deploys, it could hit them hard enough to break their ribs, and those broken ribs could end up puncturing their lungs, heart, or arteries,” he explained.
He also stressed that when a child is too young and not ready to handle these situations, the chances of accidents and serious errors go way up.
