We have quite a number of CNY movies available in cinemas this year, and What! The Heist is among the CNY movies that are still being watched in theatres right now.
What! The Heist is a local CNY movie which stars radio DJs Jack Lim and Mei Yan, Patricia Mok, Ahirine Ahiruddin, and Jaspers Lai, as well as a veteran talent from Singapore, Mark Lee. The film is directed by Matt Lai, and according to Oriental Daily, with ticket sales in both Malaysia and Singapore, the film has grossed nearly RM5 million as of February 1.
The box office in Malaysia has reached a whopping RM4.3 million, while the box office in the neighbouring country has grossed around SGD400,000 (approximately RM1.28 million).
One of the leading actors in the movie, Jack Lim, has a surprise in store for the fans.
“If the total box office for What! The Heist in Malaysia exceed RM6.5 million, I will give e-Angpow to the fans.”
Jack said that this will be done as a token of appreciation, but he did not disclose the amount of the e-Angpow.
What! The Heist, like other CNY movies, was released during the festive season, but the movie has managed to secure a strong box office performance since then. Oriental Daily also reported that as of now, it is the only local Chinese movie that has managed to break the RM4 million milestone in the past 4 years.
While maintaining its strong performance, What! The Heist has received both praise and criticism online. Jack, who is also the producer of the film humbly accepted the criticism.
“We can’t possibly satisfy all audiences,” Jack said.
Many haters of the film have also urged others not to spend on the movie in theatres, and in response to that, Matt expresses his disappointment.
“Fortunately, I’ve heard a lot of positive feedbacks for the movie, and I reminded myself that as long as the general audiences like it, then it’s fine.”
Fellow Malaysians, have you watched What! The Heist? What do you think of the movie, and do you think it has enough time to gross RM6.5 million?
