In a Facebook post by YADIM chairman and PAS MP, Nasruddin Hassan has voiced out his opposition against a plus-size beauty pageant that will be held on 2 January 2021. The pageant is called Miss/Mrs Plus World Malaysia 2020.

Nasruddin went on to say that programs like that are giving the wrong signals to the rakyat, that the Muhyiddin-led government will allow programs like that to go on, when actually the public knows that the Prime Minister is very serious in ridding activities that are not beneficial in terms of moral. He then pointed out that we are still in the midst of a pandemic and any sort of events that are not urgent should not be held as there will still be a risk in the transmission of virus.

The YADIM chairman then said that this is the attitude the whole world took on as they continued to hold hedonistic programs such as Miss World 2021.

“Holding these contests are actually not allowed in any religion especially Islam as they are exploitative and contributing to the hedonistic culture.”

He added that if one wanted to justify the organisation of these events by saying that they encourage economic and social activities, that would be too narrow as the spillover effect is too marginal whereas the social values that we Malaysians have are eroding.

After presenting all their points, Nasruddin then said that YADIM calls for actions to be taken so that the program will be cancelled.

“The rakyat’s priority now is to restart the economy for their survivals and not to organise useless activities.”

In the post, Nasrudin Hassan has clarified that YADIM will be sending out a memo to the organiser and the local authorities on 21 December.

“YADIM is confident that a majority of the rakyat across different races and religion will not allow for these unbeneficial activities that will cause the wrath of Allah SWT to go on.”

In response to that, the pageant organiser has hit back at the YADIM chairman with a Facebook post and said,

“All pageants including our Miss Plus World Malaysia are contributing not only to the moral value but to the building of a generation that participate in humanitarian services, creating awareness against body shaming and bullying, promoting and educating intelligence.”

“Even our theme is ” Queens with Causes”, which serves a noble purpose.”

“Our objectives and visions are to celebrate, promote and elevate plus-size women’s beauty, intelligence and confidence. We teach our participants and queens world diplomacy, humanitarian work, respect of cultures and diversity, and how to be role models of peace and love. Is that not a great academy for training and transformation?”

Touching on Covid-19, they said that the event held will have limited seats as it is more of a virtual event. They also mentioned that the winner will be sent to compete on a global scale next year which will be a great promotion for the nation.

“Stopping Malaysian ladies from participating in this international pageant will be a big loss for Malaysia and the world may have a bad perception of the country.”

“Of course Malaysia will not like to be associated to countries that do not recognise women’s rights and abilities in this modern era.”
