Ice cream brands are always experimenting with new flavours, including some pretty wild combinations. From sweet to savoury, Malaysians are game for it all!
Recently, a local ice cream chain launched a new limited-edition flavour inspired by the classic Cap Ibu dan Anak (Pei Pa Koa) cough syrup, sparking a wave of nostalgia and excitement among Malaysians.
KKM advised to discontinue the new ice cream flavour
But just after the release, Inside Scoop shared an announcement on their X account (formerly Twitter) with an important update mentioning they had to pull the flavour off the shelves, following advice from the Ministry of Health (KKM).
According to New Straits Times, after getting the word from KKM, Inside Scoop’s Marketing Director, Andrew Hong, said they told all 49 stores to pull the Ubat Batuk Cap Ibu dan Anak-flavored ice cream immediately.
“We’re taking the matter raised by the ministry very seriously and apologise for any inconvenience caused,” Hong added.
“We regret the mistake on our part”
Hong explained that the brand thought it was fine to launch a flavour featuring the Cap Ibu dan Anak cough syrup, especially since other ice cream chains in the region were doing the same.
He added that this flavour is a popular hit in Singapore, which inspired them to create their own local version.
He also mentioned that they were genuinely unaware of the Health Ministry’s regulations prohibiting the use of Cap Ibu dan Anak cough syrup in food products, which is a violation of Section 13B(2) of the Food Act 1983.
“We regret the mistake on our part and will make sure to be extra careful and mindful in future, not to repeat the mistake.”
